Will these be in print as well, or just as electronic media?

    • Erica says:

All JManga projects are, at this point, digital. If that changes in the future, I’ll be sure to let you know. ^_^

Aww, I thought, with ALC involved, that we’d get dead-tree formats of these. I know that myself and quite a few other people would buy them.

Any idea if these are going to be limited by region? I’m buying as much as I can at JManga from series I like, to show my support and stuff :), but region limits are kind of getting in the way.

    • Erica says:

Daniel – You’d probably want to ask Jmanga that to be sure, but my understanding is that these will be globally accessible. I’m very adamant about that, so when I can, I really press that point with them.

Digital only is a big letdown. I’d buy it instantly if there where physical copy

    • Erica says:

I think it’s fair to say that you’ll be seeing much more digital than physical releases of Yuri. The size of the audience and their willingness to spend limits what can be successfully printed.

Take Yuru Yuri for instance. It’s ongoing, with 8 current volumes. If there were approximately 4000 people willing to commit to all 8 volumes, it would be worth printing. But it’s not fair is a few hundred want something to ask a publisher to spend thousands and thousands of dollars on licensing it, only to lose all that money and have to stop printing the series before it’s complete. It’s not a good business decision. Even globally, there are not the numbers of people to buy a book (versus the number of people that say they want it) to make printing and shipping a book cost-effective. But digital is a great solution. People all over the world get to read the content, there’s no shipping, stock, return fees, no printing costs and no stock sitting in a warehouse.

Hopefully you’ll come to appreciate the opportunity digital brings to such a small, fragmented audience. ^_^

I am fully aware of that and mostly agree with you that it’s easier to publish digital content over physical one and that getting something in english is better than not getting anything at all.

I just prefer to ready my manga while confortably lying on my bed instead of sitting in front of my computer. I dont realy like digital reader and like the feel of flipping pages.

But just how do you evaluate how many people would buy the books if you were to print them ? You say 4000 people would be ok, but isn’t it pretty hard to count ?
It’s true fan kind of assume that there MUST be so many people worldwide (i precise worldwide as i live in France and import most of my manga from US publisher) that would love to get a physical copy of their manga, that those number must surely be reached, but we, fan, don’t realy know in fact.

And i always found strange that there seem to be a lot more yuri getting physical release in French than in English, especialy recently with a lot of release from manga that are not even well known from internet fans.

Vive Le France! I have to admit thats definatly an area the French are more advanced than the Americans. There are a lot of Yuri sites on the web. We should definatly support the official sites and buy the physical copies of the manga when they come out. Personally I like a solid paper addition of manga so when a company(like Seven Seas) puts out a manga(like Girlfriends) we need to support them 100%. We should encourage our friends to do the same.
